Sewing machines
A shoe factory closing room. This room was where leather components of a shoe were stitched together. These became known as uppers. Completed uppers can be seen on the workers right. Once the stitching was completed they were taken to the lasting room where they were attached to lasts. The stools the ladies sat on for possibly 8 or more hours a day were plain wood without any padding. The lady on the left has put improvised padding on. Very uncomfortable stools and were still used into the 80s in some factories.
